at Cornell Invitational – Day 1

ITHACA, N.Y. – The Rider University golf team traveled to Robert Trent Jones Golf Course in Ithaca, N.Y. to take part in the Cornell Invitational this weekend. The Broncs were able to finish their first round before heavy rain suspended play midway through the second round.

After the first round, the Broncs were 11th out of the 15 competing teams. Rider had a team score of 309. Binghamton University is the leader after the first round with a team score of 300.

“We didn’t have our best this morning,” first year head coach Jason Barry said about his teams start. “We grinded this morning and found ourselves only nine back of the lead.”

Leading the way for the Broncs in the early going was sophomore Tom Yarson (Montgomery), ending his first round with a 75. Yarson is currently tied for 13th.

“Tom played very solid,” Barry said about the sophomore. “It felt like he was knocking every pin down.”

Senior James Buttermark (Staten Island, N.Y/Monsignor Farrell) and freshman Sam DiGaetano (Titusville, N.J./Hopewell Valley Central) both carded a first round 77, leaving them tied for 24th.

“James had a rough few holes, but continued to fight and grind out a positive score,” Barry said about his senior captain. “Sam had a rough start but showed real heart to post a 77.”

Freshman Aaron Simone and junior Cole Clark rounded out the final scores for the Broncs in round one. Simone finished the round with an 80 and is tied for 49th while Clark came in with an 86, leaving him tied for 74th.

Play was suspended about halfway through the second round. Play will resume tomorrow morning at 7:30 a.m. to finish the round before the completion of the final 18 holes.

“I don’t think it will effect us one way or another,” Barry said about the stoppage in play. “We have to resume our round either way. I’m sure some of the guys would have liked to finish. For some of us, it will be good to have time to regroup before finishing the second round tomorrow.”

“We need to make a big run to be in contention to win this tournament,” Barry said. “Towson has a really solid second round going and we trail them by a decent amount of strokes. If everyone get its going and takes care of their game, we should be in good shape going into the final round tomorrow.”
