Canisius College 3, Rider University 1
Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Match
LAWRENCEVILLE—Despite 16 kills from freshman Kaitlyn Griffin (Chesapeake, Va./Hickory) and 19 digs and 15 kills from rookie Ryan Ackermann (Leesburg, Va./Stone Bridge), the Rider University volleyball team lost a tough four-set match to Canisius College on Sunday afternoon in Alumni Gymnasium.
The Golden Griffins won 25-21, 22-25, 25-19, 25-20.
“Give Canisius credit,” said head coach Christopher Feliciano. “They are a top three program in the MAAC but I felt we could have played a lot better. We gave away way too many points. It was a sloppy match. If we clean some things up, I’m intrigued as to what the result would have been. But we didn’t do that and ended up losing the match.”
Canisius out-blocked Rider 14-5.
The Golden Griffins improved to 22-3 all-time against the Broncs and have won 15 straight over Rider. The teams meet again in Buffalo, New York on October 26.
“Too many players on the floor were passive,” said Feliciano. “We came in and played to the reputation of Canisius being a top team and not just to play volleyball. Take nothing away from what Canisius was able to do but we had a nice game plan in place and couldn’t execute. It felt like we were pulling teeth in our communication of what not to do.”
Rider (9-3, 1-1 MAAC) travels to Saint Peter’s for a MAAC match on September 28 at 1 p.m., the first of three straight conference road matches.
“We need to execute and play with more pride,” Feliciano added. “We need more of a sense of urgency and today, it felt like we were going through the motions.”
