Rider Men 38th, Women 23rd at Lehigh’s Paul Short Run
BETHLEHEM, PA—The Rider University men’s and women’s cross country team competed at the 2013 Paul Short Run hosted by Lehigh University Saturday.
The Rider women placed 23rd of 45 teams in the Brown race, and the men finished 38th of 47 teams in the Gold race.
For the Rider men, junior Anthony Dentino (Sewell) finished 77th overall (25.08) among the 395 runners.
“The men were just okay today,” said Rider head coach Bob Hamer. “We looked like we were struggling from the beginning and we never really got into any kind of rhythm. One of the things we need to learn moving forward is that we need to race when we are comfortable. We have been under control for the early races this year and today was much different. I think some of the guys were not quite ready for this level of competition.”
For the Rider women, sophomore Nicolette Mateescu (Kendall Park, NJ/South Brunswick) finished first for Rider for the first time in her career, 23rd overall in a time of 22.23.
“I am really excited for Niky,” Hamer said. “She works so hard and is so committed it is really nice to see her rewarded for her dedication.”
“The top three women ran very well,” Hamer said. “Niky had a real breakthrough performance today. They executed our race plan very well today. There is definitely some room for improvement but I am pleased with our progress so far. The team result needs to be better. We are missing some athletes from our lineup and it’s hurting us. I am hopeful that we will be more complete in a few weeks.”
Also for the Rider men, freshman Salman Khalid (Galloway, NJ/Absegami) finished 174th (25.56), junior Evan Cornell (Toms River, NJ/Toms River East) was 257th in 26:39, senior Corey O’Neill (Old Bridge, NJ/Old Bridge) placed 261st in 26:40 and sophomore Tom McLaughlin (Egg Harbor Twp., NJ/Egg Harbor Twp.) was 282nd in 26:57.
Also for the Rider women senior Katie Williams (Franklin, NJ/Wallkill Valley) finished 207th in 25:14, sophomore Vanessa Rappold (Coplay, PA/Allentown Central Catholic) was 219th in 25:27, senior Gabrielle Randell (Warwick, NY/Warwick) was 285th in 27:54 and sophomore Kaitlyn Mosser (Parlin, NJ/Sayreville) was 286th in 28:24.
Holy Cross took first in the women’s Brown race (176). The Rider women edged Westchester University (559) for 23rd and finished closely behind Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference foe Canisius (554).
On the men’s side, Indiana University won the highly competitive gold race (89) with the Rider men topping MAAC opponent Iona by four points.
Next up for the Broncs will be the Princeton Invitational on Saturday, October 19.
