Black Sweeps Cranberry

The Black team swept the Cranberry team three games to none in the 10th annual Cranberry and Black Series, which marks the official end to the Rider fall baseball season.

It marked the first time since 2008 that the Black team has prevailed. It was just the third time in the 10 years that the series only went three games.

For the Black team, pitchers Kyle Kennett (Spring Lake, NJ/St. Rose) and junior Kurt Sowa (Bensalem, PA/Fr. Judge) held the Cranberry team hitless in games two and three. Sophomore Vincenzo Aiello (Staten Island, NY/Tottenville) was the winning pitcher in game one.

In game one, a 6-2 victory,  sophomore James Locklear (Hamilton, NJ/Steinert) hit an RBI triple for a 1-0 lead and junior Eric Strano (Robbinsville, NJ) hit a two-out, three-run inside-the-park home run.

In game two, a 3-0 decision, senior Nick Crescenzo (Hammonton, NJ) hit a two-run single and senior Ken Kremer (Hershey, PA) added a sacrifice fly.

In game three, a 1-0 contest, a sacrifice fly by junior Nick Richter (Fox River Grove, Ill.) was all the offense either team could muster in the superb pitching duel between Sowa and Cranberry’s junior David Hafer (Pine Grove, PA).

For the series, Black team’s freshman Giovanni Gussen (Mullica Hill, NJ/Gloucester Catholic) reached base four times in five plate appearances and scored three runs.   Junior Mike Parsons (Liverpool, NY) also scored three runs.

For Cranberry, junior Justin Thomas (Richboro, PA/Council Rock South) had a pair of hits and freshman Jake Tone (Bethlehem, PA) hit a triple.

The spring season begins February 18 at Maryland.
