LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ—In all spheres of life, particularly within the world of athletics, healthy competition can spur individuals and teams on to achieve great things.
Friday night in Alumni Gymnasium, members of the 2013-14 Rider University wrestling team will compete for starting roles in the annual Cranberry and White Wrestle Offs.
“Wrestle offs are an opportunity for the individuals on the team to initially earn a starting spot in the lineup,” said associate head coach John Hangey. “They are also a gauge for us as coaches to evaluate where each kid and the team as a whole stands before our season gets up and running.”
Competing for Team Cranberry will be freshman Patrick Skinner (Freeport, NY/Kellenberg Memorial), freshman Chad Walsh (Cherry Hill, NJ/Camden Catholic), sophomore Robert Deutsch (Cherry Hill, NJ/Eastern Regional), freshman John Gentile (West Deptford, NJ/Paulsboro), freshman Paul Kirchner (Somerville, NJ), junior Andrew Reca (Robbinsville, NJ), senior Ramon Santiago (Sayreville, NJ), junior Clint Morrison (Mechanicsburg, PA/Cedar Cliff), freshman David Fenton (Readington, NJ/Hunterdon Central), sophomore Greg Velasco (Union Beach, NJ/Keyport) and sophomore Curt Delia (Mullica Hill, NJ/Delsea).
Competing for Team White will be freshman Zach Valcarce (Vilas, NJ/Cape May), junior Nick Papa (Edgemont, PA/Penncrest), junior Chuck Zeisloft (Woodbury heights, NJ/Gateway), junior Jimmy Morris (Northport, NY/St. Anthony’s), freshman Wayne Stinson (Wrightstown, NJ/Northern Burlington Regional), sophomore Conor Brennan (Brick, NJ/Brick Twp.), sophomore Ryan Wolfe (New Castle, Del./Caravel Academy), junior Jeff McElwee (Cedar Run. NJ/Southern Regional), junior Donald McNeil (Plainville, Mass./Wyoming Seminary) and junior Andrew Marr (Clarksburg, NJ/Wall).
Team Cranberry is led by Santiago at 165, Deutsch at 125 and Delia at 149.
Santiago begins the season ranked 11th in the nation by InterMat, 16th by Amateur Wrestling News and 17th by The Wrestling Report. Last year he won 30 matches on his way to the CAA Championship and the NCAAs.
Deutsch, a transfer from Old Dominion, begins the season ranked 12th by Amateur Wrestling News, 13th by The Wrestling Report and 17th by InterMat. Last year he won 29 matches as the CAA runner-up at ODU and competed at Nationals.
Delia won 19 matches as a true freshman at Rider last season and earned CAA Rookie of the Month honors.
Team White is led by McNeil at 197, Wolfe at 184 and Morris at 133.
McNeil begins the season ranked 32nd in the nation by The Wrestling Report. Last year he won 21 matches on his way to the NCAA Championships.
Wolfe was supposed to red-shirt last season but due to injuries on the team was pressed into duty and ended up being named to the Amateur Wrestling News National All-Rookie team after winning 23 matches and placing runner-up at the CAAs.
Morris compiled 25 wins last season with a team-high eight falls on his way to the NCAAs.
Friday night at 7pm, the Rider wrestlers will attempt to earn their roles on the 2013-14 squad, and all fans are admitted free of charge to witness it.
“The wrestle offs are also an opportunity for the Rider community and our fan base to get to know the team and get excited for the upcoming season,” Hangey said.
