Seniors and Sacred Heart on Sunday

LAWRENCEVILLE—The Rider University field hockey team hosts Sacred Heart University on Sunday at noon on the Ben Cohen Field.

Prior to the game, beginning at 11:45 a.m., Rider will honors its graduating seniors, Alicia Govannicci, Kristine Dougherty, Shari Grinceri and Sandra Penas, a group that has 61 wins and three straight NCAA Play-In games and three straight conference championships.

Rider is coming off a come from behind 2-1 win over Quinnipiac on Friday afternoon before over 500 fans at the latest Code Cranberry event.

The Broncs continue to be led by all-time leading scorer, senior Sandra Penas (Barcelona, Spain) and freshman Nicole Hareau (Montevideo, Uruguay).

Penas, who assisted on the game-winning goal against the Bobcats Friday, enters Sunday as a 76-game veteran with 63 goals and 37 assists for 163 points.

Hareau leads the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference in goals with 13 and is a four-time conference Rookie of the Week honoree.

Sacred Heart enters play having lost at Monmouth Friday afternoon.

Rider and Sacred Heart met in Connecticut last season with the Broncs pulling out a 1-0, double overtime victory on a goal by then senior Gabby Burgo.

Rider defeated Sacred Heart 4-0 in 2011 on the Ben Cohen Field in Lawrenceville.  The Broncs and Pioneers have met 24 times with Rider winning 18.  Rider defeated Sacred Heart 2-0 in Connecticut in 2010 and 3-0 on the road in 2009.  In 2008, Rider defeated the Pioneers 3-1 in Lawrenceville and 2-0 in the '08 NEC semifinals at Lock Haven.

With a win on Sunday, the Broncs are hoping to clinch a spot in the four-team MAAC playoffs that Rider is hosting November 8-9.  Monmouth continues to lead the MAAC (3-0), followed by Bryant (3-1), Rider (3-1) and Quinnipiac (2-1), Robert Morris (1-3), Sacred Heart (0-3) and Siena (0-3).

Weather permitting, Sunday’s game, as well as all home field hockey games, will be streamed on BroncVision, the pay per view video stream of Rider Athletics.

GameWatcher (LiveStats) will also be available for free on the GoBroncs.com website for all home games and most away contests.
