Rider’s Santos MAAC Rookie of Week
EDISON, NJ—Rider University freshman Priscilla Santos was named the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference women’s soccer Rookie of the Week for all contests played October 21-27.
A 5’4” freshman fullback from Glendora, Calif. (Glendora High School) Santos led the Broncs to a 1-0-1 week by scoring all of Rider’s goals.
“Priscilla scored a couple of big goals for us this week from set pieces so it is great to see her recognized by the MAAC,” said Rider head coach Drayson Hounsome.
In Rider’s 1-1 tie with Niagara, Santos came in off the bench and scored with a header on a corner kick with less than 15 minutes left in the second half to tie the score at 1-1.
In Rider’s 1-0 win over second place Fairfield, Santos started the game and scored the lone goal of the contest, again on a corner kick, in overtime to give Rider its first victory over the Stags in nine years.
“We moved her into a more defensive position recently so she has been limited in her offensive opportunities but as a strong attack-minded personality she naturally knows how to score when she finds herself in front of goal,” Hounsome said.
Santos now has three goals on the season and two assists for eight points, third most on the team.
The four points Rider compiled in its final two games were just enough to give the Broncs the fifth seed in the upcoming MAAC Championship tournament, enabling Rider to receive the first round bye.
The 11-team MAAC Championship tournament, held at ESPN’s Wide World of Sports Complex in Orlando, Florida, begins Thursday when the bottom six teams compete in the first round.
As the fifth seed, Rider will play the fourth seed, Marist, in the quarterfinals Friday at 2pm. Saturday is an off day and the semifinals are Sunday. The winner of the Rider-Marist game plays Sunday at 11am on ESPN3. The MAAC Championship Game is Monday at 12 noon, also on ESPN3.
