Rider’s Griffin Honored by the MAAC
EDISON—For the third time this season, freshman Kaitlyn Griffin (Chesapeake, Va./Hickory) of the Rider University volleyball team was named the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Rookie of the Week.
Griffin was recognized for her play October 21-27 it was announced by the conference office Tuesday afternoon.
Griffin led Rider to a 2-1 week, with Rider defeating Delaware State and the Broncs picking up a MAAC road win at Niagara.
Against Delaware State, Griffin had six kills and six blocks in Rider's 3-0 win on October 23.
At Canisius on October 26, Griffin hit .316 and had eight kills in a 3-0 loss.
At Niagara on October 27, Rider won in five sets as Griffin compiled 17 kills (only one error) while hitting .516 with seven blocks. The win at Niagara was Rider’s first win at the Gallagher Center since 2008.
In 11 sets during the week, Griffin accounted for 41 team points as she averaged 2.82 kills and 1.27 blocks per set.
“Kaitlyn had a very good week, both offensively and defensively,” said head coach Christopher Feliciano. “At the middle position, for her to be involved offensively, a lot of things have to click with our ball control and also our setters.”
This season, Griffin is second in the conference in hitting percentage (.317), fourth in points per set (3.45), fifth in service aces (0.32 per set) and fifth in blocks (1.04 per set).
Griffin was also recognized as the MAAC Rookie of the Week on September 3 and September 9.
“Her activity at the net creates more opportunities for her teammates which has had a direct impact on our team record so far,” Feliciano added.
Rider (13-9, 4-7 MAAC) hosts Iona College in a MAAC match at 7 p.m. on Wednesday evening in Alumni Gymnasium.
