LAWRENCEVILLE—Fresh off a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference road win at Niagara on Sunday, the Rider University volleyball team is back in action on Wednesday evening as the Broncs host Iona College in a MAAC match at 7 p.m.
The match against the Gaels is the first of five home matches in a row over an 11 day period.
Rider is led by three-time MAAC Rookie of the Week, middle hitter Kaitlyn Griffin (Chesapeake, Va./Hickory).
This season, Griffin is second in the conference in hitting percentage (.317), fourth in points per set (3.45), fifth in service aces (0.32 per set) and fifth in blocks (1.04 per set).
Griffin led Rider to a 2-1 week, last week, with Rider defeating Delaware State and the Broncs picking up a MAAC road win at Niagara.
Against Delaware State, Griffin had six kills and six blocks in Rider's 3-0 win on October 23.
At Canisius on October 26, Griffin hit .316 and had eight kills in a 3-0 loss.
At Niagara on October 27, Rider won in five sets as Griffin compiled 17 kills (only one error) while hitting .516 with seven blocks. The win at Niagara was Rider’s first win at the Gallagher Center since 2008.
In 11 sets during the week, Griffin accounted for 41 team points as she averaged 2.82 kills and 1.27 blocks per set.
The Broncs are also led by junior setter Ashlee Amatulli (Menifee, Calif./Temecula Valley). Amatulli enters play tonight with 1,921 assists, fourth most all-time at Rider.
Amatulli is seventh in the MAAC in service aces (24) and in 79 sets this season, Amatulli has 467 assists and her 5.91 assist per set average is eighth best in the MAAC.
Iona (10-12, 8-4 MAAC), which defeated Rider 3-1 in New Rochelle, New York on October 19, is led by Catrina Warren who leads the MAAC in kills and points and Natalie Ziskin who is second in the conference in assists.
This is only the 12th time in 37 seasons that Rider has at least 13 wins in a volleyball season and the 13 wins are third most among the 10 teams in the MAAC, behind Manhattan (16) and Marist (14).
After tonight’s match, Rider is home against this weekend, hosting Quinnipiac and Fairfield on Saturday and Sunday at 1 p.m.
