Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Match
LAWRENCEVILLE—The Rider University volleyball team lost a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference match to Iona College on Wednesday evening in Alumni Gym.
“Credit to Iona,” said head coach Christopher Feliciano. “There were about five key plays where the ball was going to hit the floor and they picked up the play. They are a very good team and probably the hardest working team we’ve seen.”
The Gaels won in straight sets, 25-14, 25-23, 25-14.
“There were a couple of plays when it was 19-17 in the second set that could have gone either way and if we win that set, the result of the match may have been different,” Feliciano said. “To Iona’s credit, they made plays and we didn’t. Unforced errors really did us in tonight.”
For Rider (13-10, 4-8 MAAC), junior Ashlee Amatulli (Menifee, Calif./Temecula Valley) had 17 digs and 16 assists with freshman Alaina Piszczek (Sinking Spring, Pa./Berks Catholic) also compiling 17 digs.
Iona defeated Rider on October 19, by a 3-1 score in New Rochelle, New York and the Gaels swept the season series with tonight's win.
Rider and Iona split two matches in 2012 with the Broncs winning 3-2 in Lawrenceville and the Gaels sweeping Rider 3-0 in New Rochelle. Rider and Iona also split two matches in 2011.
Iona has won 25 of 30 matches all-time over Rider.
Rider hosts Quinnipiac University in a MAAC match on Saturday at 1 p.m., in Alumni Gymnasium.
“When you lose, it is never easy,” Feliciano added. “One of the things we preach is to have a short memory and get ready to go back to work tomorrow. We are frustrated because we thought we could do a better job than we showed tonight.”
