Rider’s Penas to Play in NFHCA Senior Game
LAWRENCEVILLE—Senior Sandra Penas (Barcelona, Spain) of the Rider University field hockey team was selected to play in the 2013 Front Rush / NFHCA Division I Senior Game it was announced on Thursday.
The game will take place on Saturday, November 23 at the Virginia Beach Sportsplex in Virginia Beach, Virginia at 2:15 p.m.
Penas is one of 38 players nationally and the only member of a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference team to be selected.
“We are so happy that Sandra has been selected for this honor,” said head coach Lori Hussong who has guided the Broncs to the four-team conference playoffs in all her seasons at Rider. “During her time with us she has helped raise the level of play in our program and has been an excellent role model for all of our players to learn from.”
Penas has led Rider (12-5, 4-1 MAAC) to three straight Northeast Conference regular season championships, three straight NEC Championships and three straight NCAA Play-In game appearances.
A 77-game veteran, Penas is Rider’s all-time leading scorer with 164 points (63 goals and 38 assists) and she is currently third nationally with 13 assists this season.
This season, the inaugural season of field hockey in the MAAC, Penas was named the MAAC Preseason Player of the Year after earning Third Team NFHCA All-America and First Team All-Region honors as a junior while being recognized as Rider’s Female Athlete of the Year.
As a sophomore, Penas was the Northeast Conference Offensive Player of the Year and she was the NEC Rookie of the Year as a freshman.
Penas is Rider's third senior all-star game selection in the past 10 seasons.
Rider was last represented in the NFHCA All-Star game by Virginia Egusquiza in 2011.
In 2004, Christina Ang was also selected to play in the senior All-Star game with Hussong named to the coaching staff.
Rider travels to Monmouth for a MAAC game on Friday before finishing the regular season at Princeton on Sunday.
Rider hosts the 2013 MAAC Championship Field Hockey Tournament on November 8-9 on Ben Cohen Field.
“This is a great way for Sandra to wrap up her career in the United States,” Hussong added.
