Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Match
LAWRENCEVILLE—The Rider University volleyball team lost 3-0 to the defending MAAC champion Fairfield University Stags in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference match on Sunday afternoon in Alumni Gymnasium.
Rider took the Stags to the limit before losing 25-20, 26-24, 25-23 in a match that featured 25 ties and 10 lead changes.
“We did a good job going point for point with Fairfield but we just had too many unforced mistakes,” said head coach Christopher Feliciano. “That has plagued us a lot in close matches. When you play a team like Fairfield, you can't give away any points.”
For Rider (14-11, 5-9 MAAC), senior Bridget Sheerin (Oak Lawn, Ill./Marist) had 12 kills and six digs, hitting .345.
Junior Ashlee Amatulli (Menifee, Calif./Temecula Valley) had a team-high 18 assists and 10 digs with freshman Alaina Pisczcek (Sinking Spring, Pa./Berks Catholic) adding 21 digs.
Rider took the Stags to five sets on October 6 before losing 3-2. The Stags rallied from a two sets to one deficit to defeat Rider 27-29, 25-18, 20-25, 25-20, 15-12.
“Taking nothing away from Fairfield because they played well and earned it but we lost the match, more than they won the match,” Feliciano added. “We had glimpses of playing well and the scores are indicative of that but I don’t think we made it very hard on them to beat us.”
Fairfield has won 11 straight matches.
The Stags swept Rider 3-0, 3-0 last season and Fairfield has won 23 of 28 in the all-time series. The Broncs last won against the Stags during the 2009 season.
Rider hosts Manhattan College on Wednesday evening at 7 p.m., in a MAAC match.
“Manhattan is going to come in here looking for blood,” Feliciano said. “They are competing for first place and we defeated them in their gym on October 20. It is going to be an exciting match.”
