BLACKSBURG, VA—The Rider wrestling team began the 2013-14 season 3-0 at the Hokie Duals Sunday. “The kids really wrestled hard today,” said Rider head coach Gary Taylor, who now has 393 career wins.  “We beat three really tough teams today. It took a team effort in all three matches to get the job done.”

For the Broncs, sophomore Robert Deutsch (Cherry Hill, NJ/Eastern Regional), currently ranked 11th in the nation, won all three of his bouts in his Rider debut. “He had a good day but he has to keep getting better,” Taylor said of his transfer from ODU. “He has much higher goals than these duals.”

Junior Donald McNeil (Plainville, Mass./Wyoming Seminary) also won three times, including a 14-9 victory against Chattanooga that gave Rider a 19-14 lead. “Donald also had a good day,” Taylor said.

Rider freshman Paul Kirchner (Somerville, NJ/Somerville) won twice, including a fall vs. Chattanooga, senior Ramon Santiago (Sayreville, N.J./Sayreville), ranked 14th in the nation, sophomore Conor Brennan (Brick, NJ/Brick Twp.), and junior Clint Morrison (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cedar Cliff) also  won twice.

“Ramon got beat by a really tough kid from Chattanooga,” Taylor said, “and Kirchner had a great day.”

Kirchner not only had a pin but he defeated the 16th ranked wrestler from Kent State. “The pin helped us beat Chattanooga.”

Morrison won a major decision to also help the Broncs beat Chattanooga, who is the perennial power in the Southern Conference. “Clint wrestled well,” Taylor said.  “He lost a really tight match (Kent State) in the last couple of seconds.”

Brennan usually wrestles at 157 but moved up two weights to fill in for the injured grad student Jim Resnick (Media, Pa./Penncrest), who is nationally ranked at 174.  “Conor not only won but he beat some good wrestlers,” Taylor said.  “That was really good to see. He wrestled with a lot of heart and a lot of fight. He didn’t exactly have to cut any weight to compete at 174 today. He’s a strong kid and he’s smart.”

Other winners for Rider (3-0) include junior Chuck Zeisloft (Woodbury Heights, N.J./Gateway), sophomore Curt Delia (Mullica Hill, NJ/Delsea) and sophomore Greg Velasco (Union Beach, NJ/Keyport).

“Velasco got a take down with seven seconds left against Kent State to help us win that one,” Taylor said of his sophomore heavyweight.,

The Broncs host three-time defending national champion Penn State Saturday at 4pm. The match will be televised on The Comcast Network.
