Rider’s Griffin 5x MAAC Rookie of the Week
EDISON—A Griffin is known as a mythical creature with the head and wings of an eagle and the body of a lion.
In Lawrenceville at Rider University, a Griffin is also known as a pretty good volleyball player and there is nothing mythical about it.
Freshman Kaitlyn Griffin (Chesapeake, Va./Hickory) of the Rider University volleyball team was named the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Rookie of the week for the third week in a row and fifth time this season it was announced Tuesday afternoon.
A Behavioral Neuroscience major, Griffin was recognized for her play November 4-November 10.
“Kaitlyn continues to have a great rookie campaign,” said head coach Christopher Feliciano. “I believe she is developing legitimacy as one of the top freshmen in the conference.”
Griffin led Rider to a 1-1 week, averaging 2.75 kills, 1.62 digs and 1.12 blocks per set in MAAC matches against Manhattan and Saint Peter’s.
Against the Jaspers on November 6, Griffin had 12 kills and 11 digs, helping the Broncs take a set off first place Manhattan and against the Peacocks, Griffin had 10 kills, two service aces and hit .421 in Rider’s 3-1 win on November 9.
Griffin was also recognized as the MAAC Rookie of the Week on September 3, September 9, October 29 and November 5.
“As a program, it is a great benefit to have a player of Kaitlyn’s caliber for the next three years as we continue to strive for improvement in the MAAC,” Feliciano added. “We are certainly proud of her accomplishments and that of her teammates as well.”
Griffin is third in the conference in hitting percentage (.300), sixth in aces per set (0.31) and sixth in blocks (0.98) and points per set (3.39) and she has helped Rider to 15 wins, the most victories since the 2004 season when Rider went 15-13 and qualified for the four-team conference playoffs.
Rider wraps up the 2013 regular season with MAAC matches at Siena (November 16) and at Marist (November 17).
