Rider at Mid-Atlantic Regional
BETHLEHEM, PA—The Rider men placed 14th of 26 and the Rider women placed 17th of 29 at the 2013 Mid-Atlantic Regional, hosted by Lehigh University Friday. “We ran really, really well today,” said Rider head coach Bob Hamer. “The men had a goal to finish in the top 15 and finished 14th while the women ran fantastic.”
For the Rider men, who finished ahead of Monmouth, Pittsburgh and Rutgers, junior Anthony Dentino (Sewell, NJ/Washington Twp.) placed 37th of 179, covering the 10,000m course in 31:06. “Anthony was up front
For the Rider women, who placed ahead of Monmouth, UMBC and Loyola, graduate student Megan Elgin (Doylestown, PA/Central Bucks East) finished 57th of 207 runners, covering the 6,000m course in 21:30. “That’s a Rider record for that course,” Hamer said.
Elgin’s time was 51 seconds faster than any Rider women had ever run the Lehigh Goodman campus course.
“We beat some teams that had beaten us all year,” Hamer said.
Last year Elgin placed 35th overall of the 215 runners, covering the 6,000m course in a time of 21:45, the best finish ever for a Bronc at a Regional.
Also for the Rider women, sophomore Nicolette Mateescu (Kendall Park, NJ/South Brunswick) finished 76th in 21:49. “Nici ran a tremendous race,” Hamer said.
Mateescu placed 138th in 23:41 last year at the Regional.
Freshman Megan McGarrity (Philadelphia, PA/Saint Basil) was 109th 22:20. “Our top three women were great today,” Hamer said.
Junior Josephine Boyle (Pleasant Valley, NY/Arlington) was 142nd in 23:12, sophomore Stephanie Welte (Philadelphia, PA/St. Basil’s) was 151st in 23:30. “Our four and five ran really well,” Hamer said. “They really stepped up.”
Sophomore Vanessa Rappold (Coplay, PA/Allentown Central Catholic) was 184th in 24:41.
For the Rider men, freshman Salman Khalid (Galloway, NJ/Absegami) was 61st in 31:41. “Sal had a big race for us today,” Hamer said. Senior Corey O'Neill (Old Bridge, NJ/Old Bridge) was 83rd in 32:12, junior Evan Cornell (Toms River/Toms River HS East was 84th (32:13), junior Dylan Hallahan (Wrightstown, NJ/Northern Burlington Regional) was 90th in 32:20 and junior Derek Lake (Middletown, NY/Pine Bush) was 117th in 33:08. “Our three-four-five was the key,” Hamer said. “They kept finding each other and ran together over the second half of the race, over the more difficult part of the course.”
Sophomore Sam Knipper (Randolph, NJ/Randolph) was 123rd in 33:15.
Last year at the Mid-Atlantic Regional, hosted by Penn State, the Rider women placed a best-ever 17th of 31 teams and the Rider men were 15th of 25 teams.
The season comes to an end November 23 at the IC4A/ECAC Championships, held at Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx, NY. “We’re looking forward to it,” Hamer said. “Our best races of the year were the last two (MAAC and Regional) and that’s what we wanted. Now we want to keep that trend going for one more.”
