LOCK HAVEN, PA—Three Rider University wrestlers who are red-shirting the 2013-14 season traveled on their own and wrestled unattached at the Mat Town USA tournament, hosted by Lock Haven University.
“It's good for our young kids to get quality experience at open tournaments, it helps them get ready for the future,” said associate head coach John Hangey.
Rider freshman Chad Walsh (Cherry Hill, NJ/Camden Catholic) won the 157 pound weight class, winning all four of his matches.
“Chad has done a nice job so far this year, winning two tournaments and placing in a third,” Hangey said.
Earlier this year Walsh won his 149 pound weight class at the Hokie Open and placed fifth at 149 at the Stroudsburg Open.
Sophomore Patrick Skinner (Freeport, NY/Kellenberg) won three of five matches in the 125 pound weight class and placed fifth at Mat Town.
Freshman David Fenton (Readington, NJ/Hunterdon Central) wrestled in the 174 pound weight class and went 0-2.
Walsh won a major decision over a Penn State wrestler, pinned a wrestler from Lock Haven, and won a 6-2 decision over a North Carolina wrestler in the semifinals. In the finals he pinned a wrestler from the University of Virginia.
Skinner lost in the first round but in the consolations defeated wrestlers from Binghamton and two from Lock Haven before losing to a third Lock Haven wrestler.
Rider (4-1) has a dual meet December 7 at Binghamton.
