Big Weekend at Princeton’s ‘Big Al’

PRINCETON—The Rider University men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams return to the pool December 6-8, competing at the Big Al Open, hosted by Princeton University at DeNunzio Pool.

The competition will take place over three days, with both a preliminary session and a finals session taking place Friday through Sunday. Over the first two days, the preliminaries will be held at 11 a.m. and finals will be at 6 p.m.  On Sunday, competition begins at 10 a.m. and finals are at 5 p.m.  A complete schedule can be found below.

You can watch all six sessions of the meet through the Ivy League Digital Network (see link above). You can also follow the results live using the link at the top of this release, or you can follow on your phone through Meet Mobile.

“The team is excited to compete this weekend,” said head coach Steve Fletcher.  “The ‘Big Al’ meet is a unique combination of a relaxed, competitive atmosphere that seems to set our athletes up for success every year.  The goal is to represent Rider Swimming & Diving in everything we do for the duration of a long three day meet.”

On the women’s side, Rider swims against Brown, Dartmouth, Yale, Villanova and the host Tigers and on the men’s side, Rider will take on Brown, Columbia, Dartmouth, Villanova and Princeton.

The Rider men are led by freshmen Sam Cramer (Escondido, Calif./San Pasqual) and Matthan-Matthew Martir (Severn, Md./Old Mill) along with senior diver Trevor Hiller (Galloway Twp./Absegami).

Cramer won the 200 free (1:44.23), 500 free (4:42.64) and the 1000 free (9:45.12) in Rider’s dual-meet win over Marist, earning Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Swimmer of the Week honors.

Hiller won both the one-meter dive (328.35) and three-meter dive (355.05), breaking the three-meter Coppola Pool record (348.08) in a dual-meet against Lehigh and has qualified for the NCAA Zone ‘A’ meet for the third straight season.

Martir won the 100 free (47.45) and the 100 fly (51.54) in Rider’s dual-meet win against Lehigh and in Rider’s tri-meet at La Salle University and against the University of Delaware, the 6-0, 155 pound Martir finished first in both the 50 free (21.51) and 100 free (47.11) and finished second in the 100 fly (51.66), earning MAAC Swimmer of the Week honors.

The Bronc women are led by two-time MAAC Diver of the Week, freshman diver Heather Lonkert, along with junior Carlee Oswald (Henderson, Nev./Green Valley) and sophomore Kaitlyn O'Connor (Beverly, Mass./Beverly).

Lonkert has already qualified for NCAA Zones with Oswald winning the 100 back (59.47) and the 200 IM (2:13.16) against conference rival Marist and O’Connor winning both the 100 fly (1:00.04) and 200 fly (2:10.06) in the same meet.

Rider last swam the Big Al Open during the 2011-12 season with the men placing fourth and the women sixth.  Both teams placed fifth in the meet in 2010-11.

After the Big Al, Rider will conclude the first semester schedule, hosting Georgetown at Coppola Pool in the Maurer Center at 3 p.m., on December 20.
