Rider’s McKenzie Honored by CollegeSportsMadness.com
LAWRENCEVILLE—Senior forward MyNeshia McKenzie (Springfield, Pa./Springfield (Delco)) of the Rider University women’s basketball team was recognized as the CollegeSportsMadness.com MAAC Player of the Week, it was announced Monday afternoon.
McKenzie had a career-high 27 points and a career-high 20 rebounds in Rider’s 66-63 overtime win over Binghamton on Saturday.
“We were in a battle for the game,” said head coach Lynn Milligan. “We needed our senior, captain (and All-Conference player) to step up and lead us to victory when the team was struggling.”
Playing all but 29 seconds of the contest, McKenzie shook off a 1-7 start from the field, making seven of her last 13 shots and was also a clutch 11 for 13 from the free throw line.
“Not only did MyNeshia score, she had a complete effort, in all phases of the game,” Milligan added. “She started off slow herself, calmed down and also calmed everyone else down so that when we needed big plays, the whole team was able to respond. Those are intangible leadership traits that you don’t see in a box score.”
For McKenzie, who ranks second in the conference in both scoring (19.0 ppg) and rebounding (11.9), the double-double was the 31st of her career and the fifth of the season.
McKenzie is 11th nationally in rebounding and 62nd in scoring.
McKenzie’s lay-up with 50.4 seconds left in the second half tied the score at 56-56 and her foul shots gave Rider a 58-56 lead with 11.9 seconds left in regulation.
A First Team All-Conference selection as a junior, McKenzie now has 1,147 points in her Bronc career, good for 10th all-time at Rider and her 882 rebounds ranks third all-time as a Bronc.
Rider (3-5) hosts Central Connecticut State University on Saturday at 2 p.m., in Alumni Gymnasium.
