Rider’s Deutsch EWL Wrestler of the Week
LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ—Rider University sophomore Robert Deutsch was named the Eastern Wrestling League Wrestler of the Week for all competition December 16-22.
In two EWL dual meets last week, Deutsch (Cherry Hill, NJ/Eastern Regional) won both of his matches to improve to 10-2 on the season, 3-0 in the EWL.
“This is a nice honor for Rob,” said associate head coach John Hangey. “The EWL is a very prestigious and competitive wrestling conference and for Rob to be honored based on his success is great for him.”
Ranked 18th in the nation according to Amateur Wrestling News, Deutsch defeated the 17th ranked 125 in the nation, Kory Mines of Edinboro, 3-1 in sudden victory.
Now ranked 16th, Deutsch also defeated Jonathan Mele of Clarion 6-2.
“Rob is a very gifted, motivated and driven student athlete,” Hangey said. “Rob is one of the best 125 pounders in the country and we are very pleased with how he has started out this season. We look for him to continue progressing throughout the season and be in position to earn All-America honors in March.”
Deutsch’s victory at 15th ranked Edinboro gave Rider a 3-0 lead in the 27-9 loss. His victory at Clarion gave Rider a 3-0 lead in the 21-16 victory.
Deutsch is in his first season at Rider, transferring from Old Dominion. At ODU Deutsch was a National Qualifier and a conference runner-up.
At Eastern Regional Deutsch was a New Jersey State Champion with a 42-0 record as the South Jersey Wrestler of the Year as a senior and graduated with 155 wins and three top-three finishes at States.
Deutsch and the 25th ranked Broncs travel to the prestigious Midlands Championships December 29-30.
