Rider Hosts Fairfield in MAAC Opener on Sunday
LAWRENCEVILLE—The Rider University women’s basketball team hosts Fairfield University on Sunday at 4pm, in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference opener for both teams.
Winners of two straight games, Rider (4-5) is led by senior MyNeshia McKenzie (Springfield, Pa./Springfield (Delco)).
McKenzie is second in the MAAC in scoring (19.4 ppg) and rebounding (11.9 rpg).
McKenzie enters the game third all-time on Rider’s rebounding list and ninth all-time on the Bronc scoring list.
Rider is coming off back to back three-point wins, having defeated Central Connecticut State 61-58 on December 21 after pulling out an overtime win over Binghamton 66-63 on December 14.
Fairfield enters play with a 5-4 record with the Stags losing to #20 Oklahoma on December 18 by a 79-51 score.
The Stags are led by Katie Cizynski who is averaging 14.4 points per game and 6.9 rebounds per game.
Also sparking the Broncs is sophomore Mikal Johnson (Manassas, Va./Osbourn) who is averaging 16.3 points per game in her last three contests.
Fairfield is coming off an 18-14 season in 2012-13 and the Stags went 11-7 (3rd) in MAAC competition, losing to Siena in the conference quarterfinals. The Stags received a postseason bid to the Women’s Basketball Invitational (WBI), defeating St. Francis (Pa.) and advanced to the quarterfinals before losing to Penn.
Fairfield returns eight letterwinners and four starters.
Sunday is the 36th meeting all-time between the MAAC rivals with Fairfield leading the series 30-5 but Rider has won the last two in a row over the Stags, sweeping the season series last season.
Rider and Fairfield last met on February 7, 2013 in Alumni Gym when the Broncs won 55-44.
