Rider Hosts Peacocks and Kids at Noon Thursday

LAWRENCEVILLE—It will literally be a zoo in the Broncs’ Zoo as the Rider University women’s basketball team will host the Saint Peter’s University Peacocks and many local elementary school kids as part of the NCAA Kid’s Day Out marketing initiative on Thursday at noon for a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference game.

Rider (6-7, 2-2 MAAC) begins a three-game home stand after opening conference play with three of its first four games on the road.

The Broncs last played on Sunday, January 5 when Rider led wire to wire in a 64-53 win over in-state rival Monmouth University.

In that game, freshman Stephanie Mason (Jackson/Jackson Memorial) had 14 points in only 17 minutes of play as the Broncs jumped out to a 16-2 lead in the first seven minutes of the contest.

Rider continues to be led by the play of senior captain MyNeshia McKenzie (Springfield, Pa./Springfield (Delco)) who is second in the MAAC in scoring (20.5 ppg.) and rebounding (10.2 rpg.).

McKenzie who is one-point out of sixth all-time on Rider’s scoring list and five rebounds from second on the all-time rebounding list, was named the MAAC Player of the Week for all games December 30, 2013-January 5, 2014 after averaging 20.7 points and 7.0 rebounds per contest as the Broncs won two of three conference road games, at Siena and at Monmouth.

Sophomore Mikal Johnson (Manassas, Va./Osbourn) continues her strong play and she enters the game, averaging 11.0 points and 2.4 rebounds per contest.

Since entering the starting lineup nine games ago, Johnson is averaging 33 minutes per game for the injury depleted Bronc squad and is averaging 12.9 points per contest over that span of games.

Saint Peter’s enters play with a deceiving 2-11 record (1-3 MAAC) with four losses coming by four points or less.  The Peacocks lost at Canisius College this past Sunday 48-47 in MAAC competition.

The Peacocks have three players in double-digits for scoring including Kaydine Bent (11.2 ppg.), Antonia Smith (10.5 ppg.) and Aziza May (10.2 ppg.).  Bent is the leading rebounder for Saint Peter’s, averaging 7.3 boards per game.

Thursday will be the 54th meeting all-time between Rider and Saint Peter’s with the Peacocks holding a 42-11 series lead but the Broncs have won the last two in a row.

The teams last met on February 24, 2013 when the Broncs won 73-58 in Jersey City, sweeping the season series.  The teams last met in Lawrenceville on January 24, 2013 when Rider posted a 74-51 victory.

The Rider University Department of Athletics has announced that January is Youth Month in Alumni Gym and that all kids, 18 and under, can purchase $3.00 tickets to any men's and women's basketball game and $2.00 tickets for any wrestling dual on the Lawrenceville campus this January.
