Collegiate Baseball Picks Rider 4th in MAAC
Sowa MAAC Preseason Picher of Year
TUCSON, ARIZONA—Collegiate Baseball has picked the Rider University baseball team to finish fourth in the 11-team Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference in 2014.
The newspaper, tabbed ‘The Voice of Amateur Baseball Since 1958’ also selected Rider junior Kurt Sowa as the Preseason Pitcher of the Year in the MAAC.
The Broncs won a program-record 34 regular season games in 2013, finishing in first place in the MAAC, but the top two hitters and two of the top three pitchers from last year are no longer on the roster due to graduation and the draft.
Sowa returns to lead the mound corps after earning All-East and MAAC Pitcher of the Year honors in 2013. Last season Sowa won a Rider-record 11 games and opponents batted just .180 against him.
Sowa ranked 10th in the nation in hits allowed per nine innings and was 14th in wins (11-1 record).
In just two seasons at Rider Sowa owns a 16-5 career record.
Crescenzo (Hammonton, NJ) led Rider in RBI (36) and stolen bases (20) last year, and has 167 career hits in 156 games. Parsons (Liverpool, NY) was Rider’s leadoff batter last season and has 98 hits and 71 runs scored in 113 games. Thomas (Richboro, PA/Council Rock South) has 93 hits in 98 career games.
The newsoaoer picked Canisius, Monmouth, Siena, Rider, Marist and Fairfield to be the top six.
Rider begins play February 18 at Maryland.
The MAAC Championship Tournament, a six-team event for the first time this year, will be held May 21-25 at FirstEnergy Park in Lakewood, NJ.
