Rider Looks for Third Straight Win Sunday
LAWRENCEVILLE—The Rider University women’s basketball team looks for its third win in a row when the Broncs host Canisius College in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference game on Sunday at 2 p.m., in Alumni Gymnasium.
Rider (7-7, 3-2 MAAC) is coming off a 68-40 win over Saint Peter’s on January 9, a game that saw the Bronc defense hold an opponent to the lowest point total in the 194 games under seven-year head coach Lynn Milligan.
The Broncs continue to be led by senior All-MAAC performer MyNeshia McKenzie (Springfield, Pa./Springfield (Delco)) who is averaging 20.0 points and 10.4 rebounds per game.
McKenzie, the MAAC Player of the Week for all games last week, is sixth on Rider’s all-time scoring list and recently became the second all-time Bronc rebounder.
Balanced scoring has been the key to Rider’s recent success with freshman Julia Duggan (Marmora/Ocean City) recording her first career ‘double-double’ (11 points, 10 rebounds) in the win over Saint Peter’s.
Sophomore Mikal Johnson (Manassas, Va./Osbourn) has also been a clutch contributor, averaging 12.4 points per game since cracking the starting lineup 10 games ago.
Canisius (5-10, 1-5 MAAC) enters play having lost six of its last seven games, including a 64-56 setback at Monmouth University on Friday afternoon. The only win for the Golden Griffins over that stretch was a 48-47 decision over Saint Peter’s on January 5.
The Golden Griffins are led by Jamie Ruttle who is averaging 10.5 points per game.
The game Sunday is the 36th meeting between the teams with Canisius holding a 28-7 series lead, including winning the last five in a row. Canisius swept the season series last season, winning 51-50 in Lawrenceville and 75-68 in Buffalo.
The teams will meet in Buffalo for the final game of the 2013-14 regular season on March 2 at 2 p.m.
The Rider University Department of Athletics has announced that January is Youth Month in Alumni Gym and that all kids, 18 and under, can purchase $3.00 tickets to any men's and women's basketball game and $2.00 tickets for any wrestling dual on the Lawrenceville campus this January.
