Rider’s Duggan MAAC Rookie of the Week
EDISON—Freshman Julia Duggan (Marmora/Ocean City) of the Rider University women’s basketball team was named the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Rookie of the Week for all games January 6-12, 2014.
A 6-1 center, Duggan averaged 10.0 points and 7.0 rebounds for the week as the Broncs went 1-1.
Rider defeated Saint Peter’s University on January 9 by a 68-40 score with Duggan compiling 11 points and 10 rebounds, for her first career ‘double-double’.
In a 76-72 loss to Canisius College on January 12, Duggan was four for four from the field and had nine points, four rebounds, two assists, a block and a steal in 26 minutes of play.
“Julia is getting better and better each game,” said head coach Lynn Milligan. “Having to work against 6-3 junior center Marritta Gillcrease (Pittsburgh, Pa./Perry Traditional) every day in practice is really making the team stronger at the five position.”
For the season, Duggan is averaging 3.4 points and 4.2 rebounds per game for the 7-8 Broncs who are 3-3 in the MAAC.
Duggan has played in all 15 games and is averaging 15.4 minutes per contest.
“Both Marritta and Jules are having strong seasons because they are pushing each other to become better players every single day,” Milligan added. “That combination is really helping our size in the middle (rebounding) and also opens things up for our shooters, giving us a strong ‘inside-outside’ presence.”
Rider hosts Manhattan College on Thursday at 5 p.m., in Alumni Gymnasium as part of a conference doubleheader with the Rider men’s team.
