College Basketball Doubleheader Thursday
Women Host Manhattan, Men Host St. Peter’s
Law Enforcement, Firefighters, EMT Night
LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ—The Rider University basketball teams return to Alumni Gymnasium Thursday for a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference doubleheader beginning at 5pm.
The Rider women host Manhattan College at 5pm and the Rider men host Saint Peter’s University 30 minutes afterward.
Prior to the men’s game Rider will honor retiring Lawrence Township Police Chief Daniel A. Posluszny by allowing members of law enforcement, firefighters and EMTs to receive a discounted general admission ticket for $3 by showing their badge or identification at the ticket window the night of the game.
Anthony Campbell, Rider’s Dean of Students, said the University has always maintained a close relationship with the Lawrence Township Police Department, especially with Chief Posluszny. In honor of his service to the community, Rider will present Chief Posluszny with a plaque during a halftime ceremony.
Vickie Weaver, director of Public Safety at Rider, said the Lawrence Township Police assists Rider with security for various events on campus, including basketball games and the fall concert.
“Chief Posluszny has been an invaluable resource to Rider University,” she said. “His dedication to his career and faithful service to the police department as well as Rider made him a great friend to the whole Rider community.”
Posluszny has been with the Lawrence Township police force for more than 28 years, 12 of which he spent as the chief.
The Rider women (7-8, 3-3 MAAC) have won five of their last eight games, using defense.
The Broncs have the best field goal percentage defense, both overall (.386) and three-point (.293) and have given up the second fewest points in the MAAC (63.7). Rider is also fourth in the MAAC in both blocks and steals.
On the offensive end, senior MyNeshia McKenzie (Springfield, Pa./Springfield-Delco) is second in the MAAC in both scoring (20.3) and rebounding (10.8). McKenzie was the MAAC Player of the Week the first week of January and was the Rider Athlete of the Month for December.
Rider freshman Julia Duggan (Marmora, NJ/Ocean City) was named the MAAC Rookie of the Week last week.
Manhattan (3-12, 2-4 MAAC) has lost its last four games. Rider swept the two games with Manhattan last year.
The Rider men (8-7, 4-2 MAAC) recently split the Western New York trip, losing in double overtime on a buzzer-beater at Canisius before defeating Niagara by 12 points Sunday afternoon.
Senior Anthony Myles (Dover, DE/Poly-Tech) scored 50 points on that road trip and ranks fourth in the MAAC in scoring (19.2) and 10th in the MAAC in field goal percentage.
Senior Daniel Stewart (Philadelphia, PA/Neumann-Goretti) is 12th in the MAAC in both scoring (14.5) and rebounding (6.1).
The pair combines for 2,382 career points and both rank in the top 25 all-time at Rider. Stewart is also fifth in career rebounds at Rider (786).
Saint Peter’s (6-9, 2-4 MAAC) has won its last two games and is giving up the fewest points (68.2) in the MAAC.
Peacock Marvin Dominique is averaging over 18 points and 9 rebounds per game.
Rider has won 13 of the last 16 meetings with Saint Peter's, including the last five. Since joining the MAAC Rider is 24-14 against Saint Peter's.
Saint Peter's was one of the original members of the MAAC (1981-82). The Peacocks have won three MAAC Championship Tournaments (2011, 1995, 1991) and finished runner-up four times (2006, 1999, 1989, 1982).
Both the Rider men and women are on the road Saturday, the women traveling to Saint Peter’s and the men traveling to Marist.
