Broncs on ESPNU Friday at Manhattan
RIVERDALE, NY—The Rider University men’s basketball team will compete on ESPNU Friday, January 24, when the Broncs take on Manhattan College at 7pm.
The Jaspers (13-4, 6-2 MAAC) won eight in a row before losing to Quinnipiac January 9, and won two games without their star player before losing at Fairfield last Saturday.
In the game at Fairfield the Stags built a 39-23 lead at half time and won by four, 71-67. Senior guard George Beamon is averaging 20.1 points and 6.6 rebounds per game but missed the last three games due to injury and is not expected to play Friday. In his absence, senior guard Michael Alvardo has picked up the slack. Alvardo has compiled 99 points in the last four games, raising his average to 14.2 per game.
Manhattan ranks in the top five in the nation in both free throws made and attempted and 6'7" Jasper Rhamel Brown is fifth in the nation in blocked shots.
The Broncs (9-8, 5-3 MAAC) have won two of their last three games and seven of the last 11, led by seniors Anthony Myles and Daniel Stewart. Myles is fourth in the MAAC in scoring (18.8). Stewart is 11th in the MAAC in scoring (15.4) and rebounding (6.1). Myles and Stewart are both in the top 23 all-time in Rider scoring, combining for 2,459 points.
Rider won here in Draddy Gym 69-60 on January 10, 2013 before losing to the Jaspers in Lawrenceville 62-51 on January 27.
The Broncs and Jaspers have met 41 times since the series began in 1929-30, with Rider winning 22, including 10 of the last 13. Since Rider joined the MAAC, the Broncs are 21-13 against the Jaspers, including 1-1 in post-season.
This will be the 18th time in the last three seasons that Rider has played on the ESPN family of Networks. The last time Rider was on ESPNU was February 3, 2012 at Loyola.
Rider welcomes the students back from winter break with a 4pm home game Sunday against Monmouth.
