Rider’s Martir MAAC Male Performer of the Week
EDISON—Freshman Matthan-Matthew Martir of the Rider University swimming and diving team was named the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Male Performer of the Week it was announced Wednesday afternoon.
Martir (Severn, Md./Old Mill) was recognized for all competition January 13-19.
The 6-0, 155 pound Martir won the 50 free (21.44), the 100 free (47.29) and the 100 fly (51.51) and led off the winning 200 medley relay that was victorious with a time of 1:35.49 as Rider defeated Saint Peter's University 180-107 in a MAAC meet on January 18.
“Matthan has been consistently fast this season,” said head coach Steve Fletcher. “His sprinting is a real asset to our lineup. We expect that his speed will continue to strengthen our relays as well.”
This is the second time this season that Martir was recognized by the conference, having also been honored on November 13.
Martir is a Communication/Journalism major (with a Business of Sports minor) and he came to Rider out of Old Mill High School where he was the Maryland Capital Gazette’s 2013 Anne Arundel County Swimmer of the Year, competing in the 50 free, 100 free and 100 fly.
Rider travels to Rutgers on January 25 when the Bronc men face Fordham and Yale with the Rider women swimming against those teams and the host Scarlet Knights.
The MAAC Championships are February 13-15 in Buffalo, New York.
The Rider men are the two-time defending conference champions.
