Broncs Host Monmouth Sunday 4pm

LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ—The Rider men’s basketball team will host the Monmouth Hawks Sunday at 4pm in Alumni Gymnasium, as the resident students return to campus from winter recess.

Rider (9-9, 5-4 MAAC) defeated Monmouth 89-83 back on December 5 in West Long Branch. In that game Anthony Myles scored 28 points, making 10 of 13 foul shots. Daniel Stewart scored 21 points, making 11 of 12 foul shots. The Broncs made 22 of 26 foul shots in the final 7:19 of the game. The score was tied at 61-61 before Rider used a 10-3 run and led the rest of the way.

The Hawks (10-10, 4-5 MAAC) won their last two games to reach the .500 mark at 10-10. Monmouth beat Canisius 83-82 and Fairfield 63-60, both games in West Long Branch. Monmouth is led by a pair of 6’6” junior guards, Deon Jones (15.5 points, 5.8 rebounds) and Andrew Nichols (14.5 points, 3.3 rebounds).

Sunday’s game is part of the Hourglass Rivalry.  Since Saint Peter’s, Monmouth and Rider are all about an hour from each other, the three-way rivalry between the NJ MAAC teams called the HourGlass was established this year. Similar to the MAAC’s Commissioner Cup, the annual winner of the HourGlass will be decided by the competition of all sports between the three.

To date Rider is 8-7-1 in the Hourglass Rivalry, while Monmouth is 8-5 and Saint Peter’s is 4-9-2.

Rider and Monmouth were Northeast Conference rivals for five years in the 1990s. Rider defeated Monmouth in the 1994 NEC Title Game at Rider and lost the 1996 Title Game at Monmouth. Rider is 13-4 vs. Monmouth since the Broncs left the NEC. Rider has won the last seven games against Monmouth and nine of the last 10 meetings with the Hawks. The Broncs and Hawks have met 39 times since the series began in 1974-75 with Rider winning 24.  The last time Monmouth beat Rider was during the 2006-07 season (67-66).

The Hawks went 5-13 in the Northeast Conference last year and were 10-21 overall. They lost the last four games of the 2012-13 season and were 2-9 in the final 11.

The Hawks have been to the NCAA Tournament three times in the last 13 years, including 2006, but have fallen on hard times, going 12-18, 7-24, 8-23, 12-19, 9-12, 12-19 and 10-21 last year.

Rider is coming off a loss at first-place Manhattan Friday night. In that game Zedric Sadler compiled 15 points, eight rebounds, five assists and four steals, while Daniel Stewart scored 17 points.

Following Sunday’s game the Broncs travel to Saint Peter’s for an ESPN3 game Friday, January 31.
