PHILADELPHIA, PA—It was Spirit Night at Drexel Friday night, and the Dragon wrestling team took full advantage of the festive atmosphere.

The Broncs won five of the 10 bouts but it was not enough in a loss at Drexel Friday night. “I want to compliment the Drexel wrestling team,” said Rider head coach Gary Taylor.  “I thought they wrestled with a lot of heart. The Drexel coaching staff did a good job of preparing their kids.”

Junior Clint Morrison (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cedar Cliff)  won by tech fall at 184 to give Rider a 16-15 lead. Morrison improved to 13-3 with the win. “Clint is wrestling well right now,” Taylor said. “He had a big win for us.”

Sophomore Robert Deutsch (Cherry Hill, NJ/Eastern Regional) won a major decision at 125 to give Rider a 4-0 lead. Ranked 12th in the nation, Deutsch improved to 24-4.

174 Sophomore Conor Brennan (Brick, NJ/Brick Twp.) won a major decision at 174 to cut the lead to 15-11. Brennan improved to 20-7. “Conor continues to wrestle well for us,” Taylor said.

Sophomore Curt Delia (Mullica Hill, NJ/Delsea) won at 149 to cut the Drexel lead to 9-7 while improving to 17-10.

Sophomore Greg Velasco (Union Beach, NJ/Keyport) won his third match in a row, 4-0 at heavyweight, for the final score.

Drexel took a 9-4 lead with a pin at 141 and an upset victory at 165 gave the Dragons a 15-7 lead.

Drexel’s Brandon Palik, ranked 20th in the nation at 197, won by tech fall to give Drexel a 20-16 lead.

The Broncs (12-6) and Dragons (6-13) have met 41 times since the series began in 1970-71, with Rider winning 32, including the last five meetings before Friday.

Rider and Drexel are former East Coast Conference, East Coast Wrestling Association and Colonial Athletic Association rivals.

Rider won 26-12 over Drexel last season in Lawrenceville. The last time Drexel beat Rider was during the 2006-07 season.

Rider returns to Alumni Gymnasium Sunday for the final time this season, hosting another long-time nemesis, Hofstra, at 5pm. Prior to that match Rider’s graduating seniors, Ramon Santiago and Jim Resnick will be honored.
