Broncs Picked Third
Crescenzo Preseason All-MAAC
LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ—The Rider University baseball team is picked to finish third in the 11-team Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference, according to a preseason poll of the head coaches.
Canisius, the 2013 MAAC Champion, is picked to repeat, while conference newcomer Monmouth is picked to finish second.
Rider, the 2013 MAAC Regular Season Champion, is picked third, ahead of Siena, Marist and Fairfield.
Rider senior centerfielder Nick Crescenzo (Hammonton, NJ/Hammonton) was named to the Preseason All-MAAC team.
“As we all know, preseason predictions are just that,” said Rider head coach Barry Davis, the 2013 MAAC Coach of the Year. “Hopefully we'll finish higher than third and place more than one of the All-MAAC team.”
The MAAC will crown its 2014 Champion with a six-team tournament for the first time this year. Monmouth will host the tournament in Lakewood at the FirstEnergy Park.
Crescenzo was the MAAC Rookie of the Year and a Freshman All-American in 2011 and was an All-New Jersey selection last year. A team captain, the centerfielder enters his senior year with 167 career hits.
“This team will be challenged all year to succeed in a much tougher league than in the past,” Davis said. “We are looking forward to getting the opportunity.”
The Rider baseball season is scheduled to begin February 18 at the University of Maryland. The first home game is March 11 and the first MAAC game is March 29-30, a three game series at new MAAC member Quinnipiac. The QU Bobcats are picked to finish 11th this year.
