Washington – Preseason All-MAAC
EDISON—Senior Kehli Washington (Lulea, Sweden/New Rochelle) of the Rider University softball team was recognized by the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference on Wednesday, earning a spot on the 2014 Preseason All-MAAC Team as an outfielder, in voting by the conference head coaches.
“Kehli has had a great career,” said Bronc softball coach Tricia Carroll. “She has earned the reputation that she is a player our opponents have to worry about and plan for.”
A 141 game veteran, Washington enters her senior season with 140 hits, 25th best all-time at Rider.
Last season, Washington started all 49 games in the outfield and led the Broncs in hitting (.349), on-base percentage (.410), runs scored (34), hits (54), triples (1) and stolen bases (24). Washington handled 87 of 88 chances in the outfield for a fielding percentage of .989.
“Anytime Kehli leads off an inning, we have a chance to score,” Carroll said. “She sets the table and the team has more confidence when she gets on base. Kehli makes things happen.”
Washington led Rider with 13 multiple hit games and she had a 12 game hitting streak and a 21 game reached base streak during the 2013 season.
Washington led the conference in stolen bases and was fifth in the MAAC in hits and 13th in batting average.
Washington was a First Team All-MAAC selection as a junior after earning Second Team All-MAAC honors as a sophomore.
Rider opens the 2014 season at the Aggie Invitational, hosted by North Carolina A&T, February 21-23 in Greensboro, North Carolina.
