Broncs Host Jaspers Thursday

LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ—Snow or not, the show must go on.

Rider will host the Manhattan Jaspers in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference game Thursday at 7pm in Alumni Gymnasium, regardless of the weather.

The second place Jaspers (17-6, 10-4 MAAC) are traveling on Wednesday, before the anticipated arrival of Winter Storm Pax, to take on the fifth place Rider Broncs (12-11, 8-6 MAAC).

The Jaspers have won their last three games and six of their last nine, including a 78-77 win over Niagara on Sunday.  Earlier this season Manhattan won eight in a row. Senior guard George Beamon is averaging 19.0 points and 6.8 rebounds per game.

Manhattan defeated Rider 67-51 on ESPNU January 24 in New York.

The Broncs continue to be led by seniors Daniel Stewart and Anthony Myles and freshman Jimmie Taylor III.

Taylor was recently named the MAAC Rookie of the Week for the second time this season.  JT3 ranks second in the MAAC in three-point field goal percentage (.460), 15th in both overall field goal percentage (.454) and assists (2.4) and is 26th in the MAAC in scoring (11.1).

Myles is eighth in the MAAC in scoring (17.0) and his 1,304 career point total is 22nd most ever at Rider.

Stewart is 15th in the nation in free throws made (145) and third in the MAAC in free throw percentage (.863).  Averaging 15.6 points and 6.0 rebounds per game, Stewart ranks third all-time at Rider in career rebounds (833) and 19th in career scoring (1,322).

The Broncs and Jaspers have met 42 times since the series began in 1929-30, with Rider winning 22, including 10 of the last 14. Since Rider joined the MAAC, the Broncs are 21-14 against the Jaspers, including 1-1 in post-season.

Manhattan was one of the strongest basketball programs in the MAAC in the first half of the last decade, competing in either the NCAAs or the NIT four times in a five-year period.  Manhattan was in the 2003 and the 2004 NCAA Tournaments and the 2002 and 2006 NIT.  In 2006 the Jaspers defeated FDU and Maryland in the NIT.

The Jaspers were 21-13 in 2011-12, 12-6 in the MAAC and were rewarded for their 20-win season by an invitation to the Tournament, where the Jaspers beat Albany before losing to Fairfield.  The Jaspers were 9-9 in the MAAC last year but won two games in the MAAC Championship Tournament to advance to the Title Game, where they lost by just three points.

Rider travels to Fairfield for a 4pm game Saturday afternoon.
