CLEVELAND, OHIO—Cleveland State used a pair of pins and a forfeit victory to defeat Rider in an Eastern Wrestling League dual meet Saturday. The Broncs and Vikings each won five bouts.

“We have some guys wrestling very well right now and some who are not,” said Rider head coach Gary Taylor.

For Rider (13-8, 4-2 EWL), sophomore Robert Deutsch (Cherry Hill, NJ/Eastern Regional), ranked 11th in the nation at 125, won by fall to give Rider a 17-9 lead. Deutsch improves to 26-4 overall, 20-1 in duals and is 6-0 in the EWL.

Rider junior Clint Morrison (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cedar Cliff), ranked 18th in the nation at 184, won a major decision to give Rider an 11-0 lead. Morrison improves to 15-3 overall, 3-1 in the EWL. Morrison has four major decisions and a tech fall in his last five matches.

“Rob and Clint have been very consistent,” Taylor said.  “They are both competing at a high level.”

Freshman Wayne Stinson (Wrightstown, NJ/Northern Burlington Regional) won by fall at 157 in the final bout of the day. “It was nice to see Wayne get that win,” Taylor said.

Rider senior Ramon Santiago (Sayreville, N.J./Sayreville) won a major decision at 165 to give Rider a 4-0 lead. Santiago improved to 16-12 overall, 5-1 in the EWL.

Bronc sophomore Conor Brennan (Brick, NJ/Brick Twp.) won his 11th match in a row to give Rider a 7-0 lead. Brennan is now 22-7 overall, 6-0 in the EWL.

This was the first-ever meeting between Rider and Cleveland State (1-9, 1-3 EWL). “They might not have had a very good record coming in but they got their hands raised today and got the win,” Taylor said of the Vikings.

Rider will travel to Princeton for the final dual meet of the season February 21. “Princeton just beat Columbia so they are going to be a challenge for us,” Taylor said.

Rider returns to Cleveland State March 8 for the EWL Championships.
