Rider to Honor Back-to-Back NCAA Tournament Teams
LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ—Twenty years ago the Rider men’s basketball program made back-to-back NCAA tournament appearances after winning a pair of Northeast Conference Championships.
Members of the 1992-93 and 1993-94 teams will reunite this Sunday for a post-game reunion and will be honored during the 2pm Rider game against Siena on February 23.
The two championship teams were led by Rider Hall of Famers Darrick Suber ’93, Deon Hames ’96, Mark Wilcox ’94 and head coach Kevin Bannon.
Suber is Rider’s career scoring leader and was named to the All-Tournament Team in every tournament he played in at Rider, including the MVP of the 1991 East Coast Conference Championship, the only time in ECC history that the MVP did not come from the winning team.
Suber made the winning shot at the buzzer to defeat Wagner in the 1993 NEC Title Game, finishing that game with 33 points.
Hames led Rider to four NEC Championship Games in his career and graduated fifth in career scoring and still holds the career assist record.
Wilcox graduated 13th in career scoring and fourth in career assists and played in three Conference Title Games.
Bannon compiled 131 wins in his eight seasons, reaching 100 wins faster than any Rider head coach before him. Bannon’s teams were 40-6 in Alumni Gym against NEC teams.
