LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ—Ellie Smith of Norwich, England has signed a national letter of intent to further her education and soccer career at Rider University, Rider head coach Drayson Hounsome announced.
“We are pleased to officially announce the addition of international student-athlete Ellie Smith to our 2014 roster,” said Hounsome.
Smith is a product of the Norwich City Center of Excellence, where she was a four-time Player of the Year. She currently plays for the women's first team of English Premier League side, Norwich City F.C .
A true all-round athlete, Smith received school colors (varsity letter) in five sports; soccer, softball, netball, field hockey and cross country.
“We have followed Ellie's progress very closely since first identifying her in London in 2012 and know she has the potential to have a big impact in the MAAC,” Hounsome said.
Last season Rider reached the semifinals in the 11-team MAAC Championship tournament. “She is athletic and technically gifted, with excellent balance and composure on the ball,” Hounsome said. “She can play as either a striker or midfielder and is a great addition to offensive unit of players.”
Smith is the ninth Bronc to be added to the 2014 roster. Rider graduated five players from the 2013 team that was 6-0-1 at home.
