Rider Honored with National Team GPA Recognition
9 Broncs Honored by the NFHCA
GLEN ALLEN, Virginia--The Rider University field hockey team was one of 66 Division I teams recognized by the National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) for a grade point average over a 3.00 it was announced on March 20.
Rider, the 2013 regular season champions of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference, had nine players honored by the NFHCA for a g.p.a. over a 3.30.
In the 2013 Gladiator by SGI / NFHCA Division I National Team grade point average awards, Rider earned a 3.29 grade point average after compiling a 3.26 on a 4.00 scale in 2012 and a 3.37 grade point average in 2011.
All of the academic accolades were accomplished while Rider was winning its fifth conference title in a row, four in the Northeast Conference (2009-2012) with the inaugural MAAC regular season title in 2013.
Overall, Rider finished 13-7, 5-1 in the MAAC, losing in the conference semifinals by a 1-0 score.
Broncs earning over a 3.30 grade point average were freshman Carlota Alsina (Barcelona, Spain), junior Dezarae Fillmyer (Roebling/Florence), senior Alicia Govannicci (Springfield, Pa./Cardinal O’Hara), senior Shari Grinceri (Hammonton/St. Joseph’s), freshman Nicole Hareau (Montevideo, Uruguay), junior Laura McCormick (West Windsor/W. Windsor-Plainsboro HS South), freshman Kalyn O'Brien (Southampton/Seneca), sophomore Joelle Prettyman (Newark, Del./St. Mark’s) and freshman Carolina Vergroesen (Amsterdam, Netherlands).
Vergroesen is a General Liberal Arts major who has a 4.00 grade point average and O’Brien is a General Liberal Arts major who compiled a 3.93 g.p.a. Both were recognized with distinction by the NFHCA for earning a 3.90 grade point average or higher.
Hareau is an Arts Administration major with a 3.80 g.p.a., Govannicci is an Elementary Education/Psychology major with a 3.52 grade point average, Prettyman is a Multi Media and Web Design major with a 3.45 grade point average, Fillmyer is an Elementary Education/History major with a 3.44 g.p.a., and Alsina is a Psychology major with a 3.40 grade point average.
McCormick compiled a 3.31 grade point average as an Elementary Education/Psychology major and Grinceri is a Psychology major with a 3.31 g.p.a.
Rider has advanced to the four-team conference playoffs in all 14 seasons under head coach Lori Hussong and Hussong has led 11 of her Rider teams to either a conference championship (2012, 2011, 2010, 2004, 2002, 2000) or a conference regular season title (2013, 2012, 2011, 2010, 2009, 2005, 2003, 2001).
Rider returns 15 letterwinners for 2014.
