Rider at Quinnipiac

HAMDEN, CT—The Rider baseball team will begin Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play with a three game series in Hamden, Connecticut, taking on new-MAAC member Quinnipiac. The series begins with a doubleheader 10am Saturday.

Rider has been led by a pair of juniors on the corners of the infield, third baseman Nick Richter (Fox River Grove, Ill./Cary-Grove) and first baseman Justin Thomas (Richboro, PA/Council Rock South), along with senior centerfielder Nick Crescenzo (Hammonton, NJ/Hammonton).

Thomas is batting .347 with a slugging percentage of .556, and has almost 30 percent of his teams RBI.

Richter ranks 28th in the nation with 11 (of 14) stolen bases in 20 games and is batting an even .300 in his first season as a Bronc.

Crescenzo leads the team in runs scored and is batting .290.  Crescenzo enters the Quinnipiac series with 187 career hits, 17th most ever at Rider.

The first game of the series will be pitched by junior Kurt Sowa (Bensalem, PA/Fr. Judge).  Sowa was the 2013 MAAC Pitcher of the Year and has earned MAAC Pitcher of the Week honors this year. Sowa has 27 strike outs in 28 innings pitched and enters the series with a career record of 17-8.

Quinnipiac (5-14, 2-1 MAAC) has already played a MAAC series, taking two from Manhattan.

Rider defeated Quinnipiac in 2011 and in 2002, the only two times the Broncs have played the Bobcats.

The three-game series is scheduled to begin with a 10 am doubleheader Saturday, followed by a single game at 1pm Sunday. Monday is the only make-up date. Rider hosts Seton Hall Tuesday at 3:30pm on the Sonny Pittaro Field.
