Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Match
LAWRENCEVILLE—Both the Rider University men’s and women’s tennis teams were swept by Marist College on Thursday afternoon in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference match.
“We played against a very strong team under windy and really wintery conditions,” said head coach Ed Torres. “It’s spring but I almost feel like we are a winter sport at this point.”
For the Rider men, freshman Chanton Phan (Perkasie, Pa./Pennridge) won four games at number two singles before losing 6-0, 6-4.
“The guys kept the ball in play and battled,” Torres said. “Chanton played a very good match, was steady and kept the ball alive. Working the fore hand and the back hand, that’s his game. He is a steady player.”
For the Bronc women, junior Alison Noll (Monmouth Junction/South Brunswick) took her opponent to three sets at number one singles before losing 6-2, 2-6, 2-6.
“As usual, Allison had the best match,” Torres said. “She faced a very good player and won the opening set against one of the best players in the conference. Everyone really gave a solid effort under some tough conditions.”
Marist is the defending MAAC champions on both the men’s and women’s sides.
Pending the weather, both the Rider men and women host St. Francis (Pa.) on Saturday with the women scheduled to travel to Towson on Sunday.
