Rider Hosts Bronc-A-Q and Lafayette Tuesday

LAWRENCEVILLE—The Rider University softball team will look to feast on the competition when it hosts Lafayette College in a non-conference doubleheader on Tuesday at Herb and Joan Young Field.

The games will feature Rider’s annual Bronc-A-Q, with free burgers, hot dogs and beverages as Rider welcomes the Leopards to Lawrenceville for the 3:00 p.m., first pitch.

Rider enters play having split a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference doubleheader against Saint Peter’s University on Monday, winning the second game 13-0 behind shutout pitching from freshman Kaitlin Kallert (Woodland Park/Passaic Valley) and a four for four game from senior Kehli Washington (Lulea, Sweden).

Junior Amanda Irving (Westminster, Md./Westminster) homered twice during the doubleheader and enters play as one of three players on the 100-hit watch list for the Broncs.

Irving begins Tuesday with 98 career hits, junior Gina McCool (Marlton/Cherokee) enters play with 96 hits and junior Allysen Breeden (Hagerstown, Md./North Hagerstown) has 89 career hits.

45 players in the 37 years of the Rider softball program have reached the century mark in hits.

The Leopards come in having lost two of three games at Army and Lafayette is 6-29, 4-11 in the Patriot League.

Rider and Lafayette last met on April 23, 2013 in Easton when the Broncs won 5-4, despite being out-hit by the Leopards.  That was the 61st meeting between Rider and Lafayette with the Broncs winning for the 44th time.

In 2012, Rider won 9-1 and 13-5 in Lawrenceville over the Leopards.  Lafayette defeated Rider at the Rebel Spring Games on March 16, 2011 by a 5-2 score and won 6-5 in 10 innings at the Rebel Games on March 18, 2010.  The teams met in Lawrenceville on March 11, 2009 with Lafayette winning the opener 7-5 and Rider taking the nightcap 6-0.  The teams last met in Easton, Pa., on April 1, 2008 when the Leopards swept the doubleheader, 8-0 and 9-1.

Today’s doubleheader ends a 10-game home stand for the Broncs with Rider heading to Western, New York for MAAC doubleheaders against Canisius (Saturday) and Niagara (Sunday).

Rider’s last home doubleheader of the season is April 30 against La Salle University.
