Rider’s Simone Plays in U.S. Open Qualifier
LOUDONVILLE, N.Y.—Freshman Aaron Simone (Niskayuna, N.Y./Niskayuna) of the Rider University golf team, competed in the U.S. Open qualifier on May 14.
With six qualifying positions and two alternate spots for the 114th Open Championship available, the 5-10, 140 pound Simone shot a round of two over par (74) and finished tied for 11th place overall out of 57 competitors at the 6,840 yard, par 72 Schuyler Meadows Club.
Simone opened with a bogey but rebounded with a birdie on the third hole to get back to even par.
A double bogey on the fourth hole put him back to two over par before Simone pared eight holes in a row.
A birdie on the 505 yard par five 13th hole brought Simone back to plus one but back to back bogeys on the 16th and 17th holes put him three over with his round ending with a birdie on the par four 18th hole, securing a round of 74.
“Aaron continued to improve for Rider all season and his play today shows that,” said head coach Jason Barry who saw another Rider rookie Sam DiGaetano score a 74 in a U.S. Open qualifier in Skillman, New Jersey earlier in the week. “A few bad shots cost him a trip to sectionals. He played a solid round for the most part. Anytime you have someone with his work ethic and who is that talented, the sky is the limit.”
Simone had 11 pars, three birdies, three bogeys and a double bogey.
A Business Administration major with a Business of Sports minor, Simone finished 15th at the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Championships after a final round 77. Simone had rounds of 81 and 79 to open the tournament, finishing with a 54-hole total of 237 during the tournament at Disney’s Palm Golf Course the last weekend in April.
At Niskayuna High School, Simone was a five-year letterwinner and three-year team captain for golf, earning All-State honors in 2011 and 2013 and he finished 38th at the junior PGA championship while leading the team to the Suburban Council Division title as a senior.
