Home Opener Friday
LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ—The Rider University women’s soccer team will play the home opener Friday, hosting Fairleigh Dickinson University at 5pm on the Ben Cohen Field.
Rider (1-0) began the season with a 1-0 victory at Seton Hall, and was undefeated (6-0-1) at home last season.
FDU (1-1) also began 2014 with a 1-0 win, defeating Northwestern, before losing 3-1 to Loyola-Chicago. Those two games were part of the Marquette Invitational. FDU defeated both Iona and Hofstra in exhibition games this summer.
FDU defeated Rider 2-0 on a Sunday afternoon in Teaneck last season. Rider had played a game on Friday night. This year Rider has four days to recover between contests.
Rider and FDU have played seven times since the series began in 2000, with Rider holding a 4-2-1 advantage. The Broncs defeated the Knights in 2012, 2-1 in a steady rain.
In the 2014 season opener sophomore Bethany-May Howard (Glastonbury, England/Bridgwater College) made a career-high eight saves for her first shutout. Bronc sophomore Priscilla Santos (Glendora, Calif./Glendora) scored the only goal of the game, her fourth in 19 Rider games.
Following the FDU game the Broncs return to Ben Cohen Field Sunday to host Bucknell at 2pm. Rider is 27-8-5 on the Ben Cohen Field over the last five seasons.
Weather permitting, Friday’s game, as well as all home soccer games, will be streamed on BroncVision, the pay per view video stream of Rider Athletics.
GameWatcher (LiveStats) will also be available for free on the website for all home games and most away contests.
