Broncs Begin Play Sunday
MOON TOWNSHIP, PA—The 2014 season begins Sunday for the Rider University men’s soccer team, as the Broncs travel to Robert Morris University for a 1pm contest.
“We are physically stronger this year,” said Rider head coach Charlie Inverso. “Everybody came in in good shape. We have more depth this year. We have a great nucleus of guys who get along. It is a great environment. We’re optimistic. The culture on the team is very positive. We have a good group of guys. The chemistry on this team is great and I think it will help us wins some games. Everybody is buying into what we are trying to do.”
The Rider squad returns a First Team All-MAAC selection, a Second Team All-MAAC pick and a pair of MAAC All-Rookie team members from the team that was 8-9-1 overall, including six wins at home. The eight wins were the most in 13 years.
Robert Morris began the season Friday with a tie against Hartwick.
The Colonials are picked to finish sixth in the Northeast Conference this year and return three All-NEC players, including Neco Brett, who led the entire NCAA with 36 points last year (14 goals, eight assists).
Rider defeated Robert Morris 2-1 in the 2013 opener at Rider. In that game, Rider scored the first goal of the game early in the second half, and each team then went on to score on a penalty kick.
Last year’s win in the season opener was the second in three years and the third in the last six season debuts for Rider.
