CHAMPAIGN, IL—The Broncs won two of three matches at the Illinois Quads Sunday afternoon. “We got to see a lot of things that we need to work on but there was certainly reason for optimism,” said Rider head coach Gary Taylor. “This trip was well worth it and will help in the long run. It lets us know where we are at.”

For the Broncs (2-1), junior Rob Deutsch (Cherry Hill, NJ/Eastern Regional) and red-shirt freshman B.J. Clagon (Toms River, NJ/Toms River South) both went 3-0. Senior Clint Morrison (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cedar Cliff) went 2-0.

“Rob looked good at his new weight,” Taylor said of his nationally ranked 125 who moved up to 133. “Clagon, being a freshman, showed an awful lot. He wrestled hard.”

Rider senior Chuck Zeisloft (Woodbury Heights, NJ/Gateway), senior Donald McNeil (Plainville, Mass./Wyoming Seminary), junior Greg Velasco (Union Beach, NJ/Keyport) went 2-1 on the day.

“Donald looked very good for his first time back since having his shoulder operation,” Taylor said of his senior 197. “He lost to the Illinois wrestler in the final 30 seconds.”

Against the 11th ranked Illini, the Broncs won two matche and lost three in the final period.  “We lost three matches in the last 30 seconds,” Taylor said.

“All three of these teams have good wrestlers who were fighting hard,” Taylor said.  “We beat two solid Division I teams out here and we lost to a very experienced Illinois team with BIG 10 kids. We can learn from that.”

Rider hosts the BIG 10 Wisconsin Badgers November 20.
