Steve Fletcher - MAAC Male Coach of the Year

BUFFALO, N.Y.—For the fourth year in a row, the Rider University men’s swimming and diving team earned the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference team title, finishing first on Saturday, the final day of the four-day competition in Buffalo, New York with Bronc head coach Steve Fletcher earning the MAAC Male Coach of the Year for the second year in a row.

"This was a tough weekend for our team," said Fletcher who also was the MAAC Women's Coach of the Year in 2011-12.  "We had some bright spots throughout the weekend including a few conference and school records, but overall we swam a little flat.  There's a lot of room for improvement and the coaches are anxious to get back to the drawing board to support our athletes to reach their potential."

On Saturday for the Rider men, Zack Molloy (Toms River/Toms River HS North) was second in the 100 free (45.54), sophomore Matthan-Matthew Martir (Severn, Md./Old Mill) was third in the 100 free (46.07), sophomore Sam Cramer (Escondido, Calif./San Pasqual) finished third in the 1650 free (15:42.72) and junior Jeffrey Prichard (Yorktown, Va./Tabb) was third in the 200 back (1:51.58).

Z. Molloy, who won the 500 free in an NCAA ‘B’ cut and MAAC record time of 4:22.74 on Thursday and won the 200 free with a time of 1:38.32 on Friday also swam on the Rider and MAAC record winning 200 and 800 free relays and set a 200 free record on his leg of that relay.

For the Rider women, which placed third after four straight years as runner-up, senior Heather Good (Hillsborough) was sixth in the 200 breast (2:26.26), junior Taylor Shelley (Wilmington, Del./Padua Academy) was eighth in the 200 breast (2:32.39), senior Carlee Oswald (Henderson, Nev./Green Valley) was eighth in the 200 back (2:22.52), sophomore Ariana Palmer (Burlington/Burlington Township) was eighth in the 100 free (54.59) and junior Erin Westcott (Unionville, Conn./Farmington) was eighth in the 200 fly (2:12.21).

Also for the Bronc men, sophomore Zach Mabin (Hamilton/Steinert) was fourth in the 200 breast (2:04.14), senior Shane Tubb (Swedesboro/St. Augustine Prep) was fifth in the 200 fly (1:52.45), sophomore Ian Flynn (Dresher, Pa./Upper Dublin) was sixth in the 100 free (46.45), junior Adam Phillips (Springville, Pa./Elk Lake) was seventh in the 200 breast (2:05.56) and junior Wayco Bailey (Casper, Wyo./Natrona County HS) was seventh on the one-meter board (235.50).

The men’s 400 free relay of Prichard, Z. Molloy, Martir and Flynn placed runner-up with a time of 3:03.46.

The women’s 400 free relay of Oswald, junior Kaitlyn O'Connor (Beverly, Mass./Beverly), Palmer and sophomore Jacquelynn Parker (Hillsborough) placed fifth with a time of 3:33.53.

Rider has now won five men’s titles (2004, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015) and the Bronc men have placed runner-up 14 times since 1996.  The Bronc women have won three team titles (2001, 2003, 2009) and have placed runner-up 13 times since 1998.

"I truly admire our teams," Fletcher added.  "Great people, disciplined work ethic and resilient in competitive conditions even when our backs are against s wall.  Our seniors did a great job leading our teams this weekend and our alumni would be proud of the way the team managed the four-day event."

Rider competes at the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Championships February 27-March 1 in Pittsburgh.
