Men: Rider University 4, Holy Cross 3
Women: Rider University 4, Holy Cross 3
WORCESTER, NY- If the Rider University tennis teams could pick a number today, two would surely come to mind. Both teams won on the same day for the first time this season and the women are on a two-match win streak for the second time this season.
“Our players were focused on winning today,” said head coach Doug Potkay. “Winning is contagious!”
Both the Rider men's and women's tennis teams won at the College of Holy Cross 4-3 on Sunday afternoon.
For the men, junior Chris Popso (Florence/Florence) set the tone at first singles with a 6-3, 6-4 victory, his first of the season. Freshman Griffin Clark (Lititz, PA/Manheim Township) kicked in a 6-1, 6-2 win at fourth singles, his third of the year. Sophomore Ryan Ciaccio (Mercerville/Hamilton North (Nottingham)) won his third straight match, his sixth of the fall, at sixth singles 6-1, 6-2.
For the women (4-4), sophomore Vanessa Canda (Jersey City/McNair Academic HS) contributed a 6-1, 6-2 result at first singles and freshman Cyd Melendez (Cayey, PR/Colegio La Merced) provided her team-leading sixth victory at second singles with a 6-1, 6-0 score. Freshman Amanda Binder (Princeton/West Windsor Plainsboro HS North) came back for a three-set victory at fourth singles, 1-6, 6-2, 7-6 (7-3) and junior Danielle Scrudato (Califon/Voorhees) completed the team’s conquest with a 6-0, 6-1 win at fifth singles.
Also for the men, senior Matthew Begley (Pennington/Hopewell Valley Central) took the first set before succumbing in the third set, 6-4, 3-6, 6-10. In doubles action, Popso and senior Adam Levi (Princeton Junction/Pennington School) grinded out an 8-7 (7-2) win at first doubles while Begley and Ciaccio took their third doubles match, 8-5, to clinch the doubles point.
In doubles action for the women, Canda and Melendez took their first doubles match, 8-4, to remain undefeated on the day.
“It was a satisfying two days,” Potkay added. “It was a successful road trip for both squads!”
The men and women look to close out their fall slate on a positive note on Saturday afternoon when they travel to Baltimore to take on Coppin State at 12pm.
