LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ – Sophomore guard Lexi Posset (Pittsburgh, PA/Beaver Area) set new career highs in points and assists with 23 and seven, respectively to power the Rider University women’s basketball team past visiting Marist, 65-46, on Tuesday evening at Alumni Gymnasium. The Broncs (20-6, 14-3 MAAC) won their seventh straight game and swept the season against the Red Foxes (11-15, 8-8 MAAC), while Marist dropped their third conference game in a row.

“Tonight again it started with our defense,” Rider University Head Coach Lynn Milligan said. “These three games in five days I thought were our best three games defensively all season. For them to be in a five-day stretch says a lot about this team’s resolve.”

Posset was a spark off the bench, shooting 8-of-13 from the field, highlighted by knocking down five three-pointers. She also dished out seven assists, recorded three steals and grabbed five rebounds. Junior Kamila Hoskova (Brno, Czech Republic/Sportovni Gymnazium Ludvika Danka) had another quality game for the Broncs, scoring 22 points on an efficient 10-of-16 shooting from the field. Hoskova also grabbed 10 rebounds to record the second double-double of her season and of her career. Senior Yeliz Dogan (Izmir, Turkey/Western Nebraska CC/Antalya Koleji) chipped in eight points on 4-of-4 shooting to go along with three boards for the Broncs.

Sophomore forward Lovi Henningsdottir was the lone Marist player in double figures with 11 points thanks to shooting 3-of-5 shooting from three-point range. Freshman Rebekah Hand was held in check most of the night by the stout Bronc defense to finish with nine points, seven rebounds and five assists.

Marist opened the game on a 5-0 run and Rider would come up empty on its first seven possessions of the game before a mid-range jumper from Hoskova got the Broncs on the board four minutes into the first. The Red Foxes would hit two of their first three attempts from deep to build an 8-2 edge heading into the first quarter media timeout.

“We struggled early,” Milligan added. “We were hesitant and passed up some shots. Kami got some good looks to get us going early again on the offensive end.”

After hitting just one of their first seven from the field, Rider would hit five of their next six shots from the field. The Broncs ended the opening stanza on an 11-2 run to hold a 13-10 advantage after 10 minutes. Hoskova was a force early on, scoring nine points and grabbing five boards in the first.

The Rider bench would come alive in the second quarter as Dogan and Posset combined for eight points through the first five minutes as a jumper from Dogan gave the Broncs a 21-17 edge.

Later in the second, a trey from the wing by freshman guard Safie Tolusso (Vevey, Switzerland/Honore d'Estinne d'Orves) gave the Broncs a 26-22 edge and after a stop, the hosts would stretch their lead to seven thanks to an old-fashioned three-point play from Hoskova with 45.6 seconds left in the half. Prior to Tolusso’s three, Dogan and Posset scored the first 10 points of the quarter for Rider.

Neither team would score on its final possession of the first half as Rider took a seven-point lead into halftime. During the first 20 minutes of action, the Broncs forced 10 turnovers courtesy of registering six steals. The hosts also did a good job distributing the ball early, picking up eight assists on their first 12 made field goals.

Rider opened the second half with on an 8-2 run thanks to a pair of three-pointers from Posset to stretch their lead to 13 at 37-24. A basket in the post from Hoskova would give Rider a 17-point lead at 45-28 with under four minutes remaining in the frame. The Broncs would later take a 20-point lead into the fourth at 52-32.

In the third, Rider outscored Marist, 23-10. This season, the Broncs are outscoring conference by 49 points coming out of halftime.

Marist would score the first four points of the final quarter before Rider responded with eight unanswered to stretch the lead to 24 at 60-36. During the spurt early in the fourth, Posset knocked down a pair of threes and senior guard Taylor Wentzel (Pittsburgh, PA/Baldwin) hit two free throws.

Rider would empty the bench with two minutes left and hold on for their ninth home win of the year.

For the game, Rider shot 45 percent (26-58) from the field and hit eight shots from beyond the arc, while Marist hit 30 percent of its attempts (16-53) and connected on just 5-of-20 from deep. The Broncs had 18 assists on 26 made field goals and forced 19 Red Fox turnovers. The Rider bench, led by Posset, outscored the Marist subs, 31-7.

The victory was the first for Rider against Marist in Lawrenceville since February of 2003. It also marked the first time in program history that the Broncs swept the Red Foxes in the regular season.

The win was the 20th of the season for Rider and it is just the second 20-win season in program history with the other coming in 1981-82. The Broncs also moved into a half-game lead for first-place in the conference standings.

The Broncs return to action on Tuesday, February 21, with a home conference showdown against Monmouth that is slated to begin at 7:00 pm. Rider is looking for the season sweep versus the Hawks after topping Monmouth, 71-69, at the OceanFirst Bank Center earlier this month.
