EASTON, PA – The Rider University women’s tennis team opened the spring semester of action with a 6-1 loss to Lafayette on Saturday afternoon at the Northwood Racquet Club. The Broncs (4-5) saw their two-game winning streak from the fall come to an end, while the Leopards (3-5) snapped their two-game losing streak.

“We played well enough to win more matches,” Rider Head Coach Doug Potkay said. “The rallies were long and the Lafayette players were more match tough than we were today.”

Lafayette took two of the three doubles matches to secure the first point of the day. For Rider, the duo of sophomore Vanessa Canda (Jersey City, NJ/McNair Academic HS) and freshman Cyd Melendez (Cayey, PR/Colegio La Merced) scored a 7-5 win for the Broncs. The victory was the sixth of the season for the Bronc pair. Lafayette won the matches at No. 2 and No. 3, 6-3 and 6-2, respectively.

In singles play, the hosts took five matches to secure the triumph. The win for the Broncs came from freshman Amanda Binder (Princeton, NJ/West Windsor Plainsboro HS North) at No. 4. Binder netted a 6-3, 6-4 straight-set win versus Meredith Block.

At No. 1, Canda dropped a three-set thriller to Rocine Moschella. After dropping the first set, Canda forced a third set tiebreaker.

The Broncs return to action on Tuesday, March 7, with a road non-conference showdown against Delaware State that is slated to begin at 3:00 pm.
