EASTON, PA – The Rider University men’s tennis team opened the spring semester of action with a 6-1 setback against Lafayette on Saturday afternoon at the Northwood Racquet Club. The Broncs (1-8) fell to the Leopards (4-6) for the second straight season.

“First match of the year and our men’s team played well,” Rider Head Coach Doug Potkay said. “Doubles play was very competitive. If we won a few more points the outcome might’ve been different.”

The hosts got off to a quick start, taking all three doubles matches. The score in each match was 6-4 in favor of Lafayette.

In singles, Rider sophomore Brandon Gildea (Manahawkin/Southern Regional) won a three-set thriller against Chris Kim at No. 5. After dropping the first set, Gildea took the second, 6-3, and won the tiebreaker, 10-8. The Leopards would take the other five matches to secure their second consecutive victory. The five Lafayette wins in singles came in straight sets.

“Brandon was our lone winner today,” Potkay added. “He came from behind after losing the first set and he steadied up his game.”

The Broncs return to action on Wednesday, March 22, with a home non-conference clash against La Salle that is slated to begin at 3:00 pm on campus.
