LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ – In a season of firsts, the Rider University women’s basketball team will check another one of their list with the Broncs making their first-ever Women’s NIT appearance.

Thanks to finishing second in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference during the regular season and top-seeded Quinnipiac winning the MAAC Tournament title to advance to the NCAA Tournament, Rider has earned the league’s automatic bid to the WNIT.

“We are very excited to be participating in the WNIT,” Rider Head Coach Lynn Milligan said. “The postseason has always been a goal of our program.  I am very proud that this group has reached that goal for the first time in our program's history.  We are very proud to represent Rider and will work hard to do our best.”

Once the NCAA Tournament committee announces the remainder of the field around 8:00 pm ET on Monday, March 13, the WNIT field of 64 teams will be announced via its website (www.womensnit.com) within an hour. Then, the committee will follow that with the full bracket announcement coming between 11:30 pm and Midnight ET. Once the bracket is announced later this evening, Rider will know its draw.

In a banner year for the program, four Broncs earned All-MAAC distinction. It was the most in a single-season since joining the MAAC and the most by any conference team this season. The accolades did not stop there as Milligan was tabbed as the 2016-17 MAAC Coach of the Year and senior guard Robin Perkins (Willingboro, NJ/Saint Francis (Pa.)/Trenton Catholic) was honored as the 2016-17 MAAC Player of the Year. Milligan was the first coach in Rider history to earn that distinction from the league and Perkins was the first Bronc to ever be named the conference’s player of the year.

Rider enters the WNIT with a 24-8 record and finished second in the MAAC thanks to posting a 16-4 mark in league play. The 24 wins mark the most victories by the Broncs under Milligan and the most for the program since the team won 26 games during the 1981-82 season. The 24 wins against Division I opponents is the most in a single season in program history as well. The 16 MAAC wins are also the most under Milligan in a season and in program history. The team also finished above .500 in conference play for the third time since entering the league. Rider’s No. 2 seed is also the best in the program history heading into the MAAC Tournament.

The record-setting campaign has seen the Broncs ranked in the CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major Top-25 poll four times. Rider first entered the poll at No. 25 on January 10 and moved up to a program-best No. 23 heading into the MAAC Tournament.
