Rider to Host UMBC in BracketBuster at 4:00pm
LAWRENCEVILLE--The Rider University men’s basketball team will host the University of Maryland Baltimore County in the seventh annual ESPNU BracketBusters – a multi-day men’s basketball event matching NCAA Championship hopefuls against each other on Friday, February 20 or Saturday, February 21.
Rider will host UMBC on Saturday, February 21 at 4pm. The Rider women are scheduled to host Saint Peter’s at 1pm that day.
“The ESPNU BracketBusters provides the league's best teams an opportunity for a final non-conference showcase game a few weeks before the NCAA, NIT, the College Basketball Invitational and the CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament, and as selection committees begin their respective pairings processes for post-season competition,” Richard J. Ensor, Commissioner of the MAAC, said.
“The ability to differentiate a team's profile from others competing for those slots on a national broadcast platform is extremely important as MAAC teams jockey for post-season berths. The return games next season also provide non-conference opponents on a home/home basis.”
UMBC is a member of the America East Conference. Last season UMBC defeated Hartford by 17 points in the conference championship game to win its first-ever America East title and advanced to the NCAA tournament, where the Retrievers lost to Georgetown by 19 points.
"UMBC is a very good program,” said Rider head coach Tommy Dempsey. “Anytime you have a chance to play against a team that played in the NCAA tournament last year it is exciting."
Rider and UMBC are former East Coast Conference rivals. Rider and UMBC have met nine times, the last time was during the 1996-97 season, a 66-49 Rider victory. Rider holds a 5-4 advantage in the series that began in 1987-88.
Last year Rider traveled to Cal State Northridge for the BracketBuster and defeated the Matadors 73-72.
